As any quench oil is used, its inherent properties of heat resistance, hardening ability, and finishing quality begin to degrade. A gradual buildup of particulate contamination causes this degradation in quench quality. Also, particulate contamination will promote cracking or distortion of steel parts.
Oxidation occurs in quench oil as it is exposed to air or oxygen. At elevated temperatures, this oxidation occurs at a relatively high rate. Oxidation results in the buildup of organic acids and the formation of insoluble materials, or sludge. These insoluble materials increase the viscosity and decrease the finishing quality of the quench oil.
When the oil is exposed to elevated temperatures, thermal cracking may occur. This thermal cracking results in the formation of new materials; some are light, relatively volatile products that lower the flash point of the oil while others are heavy, less volatile materials that increase the viscosity of the oil.Additional Information:

Viscosity: Gear oil usually has a much higher viscosity than other oils. A common misconception is that a stronger/faster pump is required in order to handle the high viscosity, when actually the opposite is true. When you try to push a thick fluid through a precise filter element the result is a very high back pressure, which ultimately leads to poor filtration results or damaged filtration equipment.
Temperature: As temperature increases, the viscosity decreases, making it easier to filter without having a high differential pressure across the filter element. It is important to find a balance as oil additives will be depleted as temperature increases.

Cutting oils / lubrication oil are primarily used as a lubricant in the interface between the chips and the tool’s cutting edge, reducing process friction and aiding in chip flow. Cutting oils are also employed as a cooling agent to remove any process-generated heat, as they increase the rate of heat flow from the machining process.
This lubrication and cooling improves the surface finish of the machined work; however, contamination in the form of water, particulate, metal shavings, or tramp oil builds up over time and will compromise the finishing quality of the neat cutting oil / Lubrication oil.
